A police officer in Mankato shot and killed a man early Saturday after a disturbance call at a hotel, according to city officials.
Police were called to the Country Inn & Suites on Hwy. 22 just after 4 a.m., according to a city news release.
The incident began when a clerk at the hotel called police to say that a man had gotten behind the front desk and was throwing things at her, according to police scanner audio. Police described the man as "very verbal."
When officers arrived, they got into an altercation with the man, and one officer shot him, authorities said.
They did not say what preceded the shooting or whether the man threatened officers in some way.
A South Dakota man staying at the hotel for a wedding weekend told KEYC-TV that he awoke around 4 a.m. and heard four shots.
Paul Moulsoff, of Aberdeen, said he went down to the first floor and saw the suspect, whom he did not know.
"Everyone in the family and wedding is safe, so I'm not sure who the gentlemen is or where he came from," he told KEYC.
The unidentified Mankato officer who discharged the firearm was treated for unspecified injuries at a Mankato hospital and released.
According to the scanner audio, the officer reported dizziness and a cut on the side of the head.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will investigate, which is standard procedure for an officer-involved shooting.
The Ramsey County medical examiner's office will conduct an autopsy on the body.
