Bimbo Bakeries expansion 12965 Eagle Creek Parkway, Savage

Type: Industrial Size: 11,305 square feet

Developer: Bimbo Bakeries USA

Details: The U.S. subsidiary of Mexican baking conglomerate Grupo Bimbo has received preliminary city approval to expand its distribution warehouse at the Eagle Creek Business Park in Savage.

Bimbo Bakeries USA, based in Horsham, Pa., finished construction of a 15,725-square-foot warehouse in the business park in 2010 and last week received the go-ahead from the Savage Planning Commission to tack an 11,305-square-foot addition onto the structure.

The Savage City Council will consider the company's site plan Oct. 15.

Bimbo Bakeries operates 30 bakeries in the United States, producing and distributing brands including Arnold, Boboli, Brownberry, Entenmann's and Thomas while operating about 7,000 sales routes.

Grupo Bimbo said it recorded sales of $3.36 billion in the third quarter, boosted by its $709 million acquisition of Sara Lee's North American operations late last year.

A company spokesman wouldn't comment directly on the Savage expansion but pointed out Grupo Bimbo announced in April it is expanding the distribution of Sara Lee bread products in certain U.S. markets.

Savage city planners said the Eagle Creek addition will consist of mostly warehouse space with a 700-square-foot office portion.

The expansion will more than double the number of loading docks available in Savage, according to the plans.

The current building has two loading docks for semitrailer trucks and 14 smaller docks for delivery trucks. The addition will provide three more semitrailer docks and 19 new docks for smaller vehicles.
