Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson declined a spot on the United States team that will compete at wrestling's senior world championships Oct. 2-10 in Oslo, Norway.
The Gophers wrestler from Apple Valley had until Sunday to notify USA Wrestling whether he would accept an automatic berth to the world championships. The nine U.S. wrestlers who won medals at the Tokyo Olympics earlier this month were offered the automatic spots. Steveson, who won gold in the freestyle heavyweight class, was the only one to decline.
Steveson has not announced whether he will return to the Gophers for his senior season in 2021-22.
The U.S. will send athletes in 10 weight classes in each of the three disciplines — men's freestyle, women's freestyle and Greco-Roman — to the world championships. The rest of the team will be determined at the world team trials Sept. 11-12 in Lincoln, Neb.
