A former deputy sheriff in central Minnesota died when his motorcycle collided with a truck, officials said.
Dave Scherping, 51, of Orrick Township, who served in the Morrison County Sheriff's Office, died in the crash Saturday in Sherburne County.
Scherping was a deputy and K-9 handler for many years. His son, Austin Scherping, currently is a K-9 handler, the Morrison County Sheriff's Office said.
According to the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office:
Dave Scherping was heading south on County Road 5 shortly before 2 p.m., when a pickup truck driver heading north turned left in front of the motorcycle.
The impact of the collision threw Dave Scherping from his motorcycle. Emergency responders declared him dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet.
The pickup driver, Robert A. Swift, 57, of Becker, Minn., was not injured.
