Former Apple Valley High School basketball player Gary Trent Jr. is leaving Duke after one year for the NBA draft.
The son of former Timberwolves forward Gary Trent Sr. announced his decision on Saturday through the school, and a team spokesman said the freshman guard is in the process of hiring an agent.
Trent became the third Duke freshmen from this year's team to enter the draft, joining Marvin Bagley III and Trevon Duval. A fourth, Wendell Carter Jr., has yet to announce his decision.
"It has been a dream of mine, since I was a little kid, to play for Duke University and for Coach K," Trent said. "Now I'll set out to achieve another dream of mine and play in the NBA."
The 6-6 Trent started all 37 games for Duke this season and was third on the team in scoring, averaging 14.5 points per game. He shot 40.2 percent from beyond the three-point arc, and his 97 threes broke J.J. Redick's freshman record by two. Four times he had six threes in one game.
"Gary was the best three-point shooter in the ACC," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "At the NBA level, that's what they're looking for. He has the size of a two-guard who will be able to fit in the NBA."
Trent is the 15th one-and-done freshman in Duke history. That list also includes another Apple Valley product, Tyus Jones, who was drafted by the Timberwolves in 2015. Jones' brother Tre, the Star Tribune's Metro Player of the Year, will be a freshman at Duke in the fall.
Trent left Apple Valley after his junior year and finished high school at Prolific Prep in Napa, Calif. He was born in Columbus, Ohio.
The NBA draft is June 21 in New York.
