A house fire in the middle of the night in Albert Lea, Minn., killed a 42-year-old man who lived there, officials said Tuesday.

The blaze struck about 2:15 a.m. Saturday in the 1700 block of Eberhart Street, said Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Laskowske.

Fire personnel removed the man from the home, who was taken to a nearby hospital where he died, Laskowske said. The victim was identified as Garth D. Conklyn. He died from soot and smoke inhalation, the Fire Department said.

The fire's cause remains undetermined. Damage to the home is estimated at $27,000.
