Stand-up guy

Mike Birbiglia has always been as much of a performance artist as a stand-up comic, which is probably why he made a smooth transition to writing and directing movies such as “Sleepwalk With Me” and “Don’t Think Twice.” The comic gets back to his roots in “Mike Birbiglia: Thank God for Jokes,” a one-man show that ran off-Broadway for four months.

The mighty two

Sidney Poitier has shied away from the spotlight in recent years, which is a shame since a younger generation could benefit from hearing the thoughts of a Hollywood groundbreaker. Fortunately, audiences have Denzel Washington, the only other African-American to win an Oscar as lead actor. Both men are saluted in “The A-List: Sidney Poitier and Denzel Washington,” a movie marathon that kicks off with the younger man’s underrated 1989 comedy “The Mighty Quinn.”

Donald Trump’s presidency has been great for at least one late-night newcomer. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” has been tops in late-night ratings the past month as viewers gravitate to his politics-heavy format. No surprise, then, the program will go live on the evening Trump addresses a joint session of Congress. Former Barack Obama press secretary Josh Earnest is scheduled as a guest.
