The last full week in January will end on an extremely active note from thesouthern Plains to the mid-Atlantic. A storm threatens to spread substantialsnow and ice eastward across this zone Wednesday into Saturday.The snow and ice will eventually be produced by the storm currently approachingCalifornia. The winter storm will come to life as moisture from the Gulf ofMexico is tapped into and cold air presses southward across the Plains.

The winter storm threatens to cause substantial disruptions to travel and dailyroutines. Schools will likely be cancelled Thursday into Friday. Residents andvisitors to the mid-Atlantic may be forced to alter their weekend plans.

Snow and ice will not be the only adverse impacts from the storm. The storm mayignite damaging thunderstorms across eastern and central Texas Thursdaynight.
