Justin Rose: The Englishman made just three birdies in the first 36 holes and needed a long putt on the 18th hole Friday just to make the cut. But no one took advantage of Saturday's calm conditions like Rose, who played bogey-free from the third group out and shot 7-under 64. It was his lowest score at the British Open by two shots.
Toss that card
Luke List: Began the day in red numbers but tumbled 55 spots down the leaderboard after a 6-over 77 that included a 40 on the front nine. List managed three birdies but also carded two double bogeys.
On the course with
Rickie Fowler: The fan favorite opened with two birdies in four holes and was one shot out of the lead with the par-5 No. 6 up next. That turned out to be his undoing. Fowler pulled his tee shot out of bounds. He sent his next shot from the tee 40 yards to the right, and wound up making a triple-bogey 8. That wasn't his only mistake. He made three more bogeys, including on the 18th, and that offset the eagle he made on the par-5 14th. It added to a 73 — only Pat Perez (74) had a higher score among the last 14 players to tee off Saturday.
Open moment
Keir McNicoll, a pro shop worker at Carnoustie, played in the day's first group as a non-scoring marker with Gavin Green. It was hardly a day off. McNicoll finished the round, put his clubs away and clocked in for the afternoon shift. He's tried to qualify for the British Open a half-dozen times, making it to the second stage last year. But the closest he's come to actually playing was in 2005 when he caddied for Eric Ramsay at St. Andrews. On Saturday, the 34-year-old finally heard his name called on the first tee. "I got emotional," he said. "It was obviously too much. Had I qualified here, I don't know what that would have been."

Par-5, 513-yard No. 14: Played nearly a full stroke under par, with as many eagles (11) as pars on Saturday. There were 53 birdies, 20 more than any other hole.
