Barry and Lisa Zelickson, principal owners of four-year-old Big Thrill Factory, are having enough success to scout for a third location in addition to the flagship Minnetonka operation.
There's also an Oakdale venue that opened in a former supermarket in 2016.
"We've seen growth in customers and sales," Zelickson said. "We've proven there's demand for all-age entertainment. Family entertainment. Corporate entertainment…for team building and staff-reward outings."
Zelickson, backed by family, friends and a bank, has invested several million in equity and debt to convert the two vacant big-box retail stores into popular-play environments that feature indoor and outdoor attractions including go karts, bowling, laser tag, video arcade, bumper cars, a cafe and party rooms, and mini-golf, climbing wall and more outside.
This month, Big Thrill Factory was named the "No. 1 Family Entertainment Center in North America," at the Brass Ring Awards. That's the "Oscars" of the International Association of Amusements Parks and Attractions. It represents 5,300 facilities and vendors in what's said a $40 billion-revenue industry.
Zelickson, 58, who said Big Thrill will be profitable this year on $6 million-plus in sales, had the idea for the business playing miniature golf with his kids. The Minnetonka location is at the site of a former Kmart store. It used to be the site of a drive-in theater and mini-golf course where Zelickson played as a kid.
Zelickson, also a senior vice president of Marvin Management, leaves day-day-operations to his general manager, Darrel Blomberg.
Zelickson is the visionary and financial architect.
"Evidently, there's still some kid left in me," Zelickson quipped in a 2013 interview. "I started to do some research, and it started morphing into a bigger deal. I created the business plan by late 2011 and went out and raised the money."
