The scene: A zebra showed its teeth, seeming to smile, at a watering hole in Namibia's Etosha National Park. The park offers some of the country's best wildlife viewing, including this herd that had come to drink. "I loved the joyful expression shown by the zebra, as it captured my delight in returning to Africa," Cathcart wrote in an e-mail.
The Destination: "Namibia is a fascinating country and well worth a visit," she wrote, adding "there is astounding game and unbelievably peaceful and beautiful terrain."
The Equipment: Cathcart used an Olympus E-620 SLR with a 140-160mm lens.
How she got the shot: "One of our fellow travelers suggested trying sport mode on the camera," she said. "This shot was a surprise, achieved in a burst of shots taken using sport mode." Most cameras have such a mode (usually depicted with a runner icon), which enables a photographer to shoot action with continual clicks. Cathcart said of her photo, "I captured the decisive moment rather inadvertently, but happily."
