A Woodbury man was charged with murder for allegedly providing heroin that led to a woman's overdose death, according to court documents.

John R. Williams, 33, was charged Tuesday in Ramsey County District Court with one count of third-degree murder in the death of a 26-year-old woman in March 2016.

According to the complaint:

Police responded to a New Brighton apartment at 4:36 a.m. March 3 and found the woman unconscious in bed. She was not breathing, and could not be revived.

The woman's boyfriend told police that they were both heroin users, and that they had gotten heroin the previous night from a man later identified as Williams.

The boyfriend said that he and the woman used the heroin on March 2 and passed out. When he woke up, the woman was not breathing, so he called Williams for advice. Williams allegedly told the man to pour milk in the woman's mouth, and the boyfriend was able to revive her.

The boyfriend later found her unresponsive again and called 911.

Police tracked Williams down using a phone number provided by the boyfriend, and tried to lure him back with a staged phone call placed by the boyfriend. Williams grew wary, according to the charge, and his phone service stopped.

An investigator contacted Williams in August 2016 to arrange an interview, and he denied knowing the woman, the complaint said. Williams skipped a scheduled meeting with authorities.

Williams was charged via arrest warrant.
