The Wolves Beat

While the Wolves wait on answers back from such players as Dante Cunningham and Shabazz Muhammad, they also work to fill vacancies in their front office/scouting/coaching staffs.

According to league sources, they'll add John Lucas III as a player-development coach and former Indiana University senior assistant coach Tim Buckley to their scouting department.

Top assistant to former Hoosiers coach Tom Crean, Buckley will primarily scout colleges.

Lucas played point guard for Tom Thibodeau in Chicago and started the season for the Wolves a year ago before he was waived.

New Orleans has been aggressive trying to bring Cunningham back, particularly now that Solomon Hill is expected to miss much of the season after he underwent surgery to repair a torn hamstring. But the Wolves remain firmly in the conversation and might be the frontrunner.

(UPDATE: The Pelicans have a trade, sending Quincy Pondexter's salary and a 2018 second-round pick to Chicago to clear more money they can use to sign Cunningham away from the Wolves.)

They also are among the teams that Muhammad is considering now that he likely will sign a league minimum salary after he turned down tens of millions of dollars from the Wolves last fall.

The Wolves have 11 players signed to guaranteed contract and still have four open spots. They'll save the 15th for a player who might be waived or bought out just before the season opener.

That leaves them with three spots they're trying to fill now and Thibodeau has said they're looking for two wings who can defend and make the corner three-point shot and a backup point guard.

Numerous free agents remain unsigned, most or all of them waiting to see if there will be moves made in the league -- New York trading Carmelo Anthony, for example -- that will free up money for a team.

Right now, most teams only have league-minimum contracts to offer because they're salary-cap strapped.

The Wolves on Wednesday officially announced that scout Scott Roth will coach their new G League team in Iowa.
