A community celebration will be held Wednesday to mark the last in a series of events aimed at helping introduce families on St. Paul's West Side to their neighborhood's schools.

The West Side Wednesday events began last fall as an effort to stem the flow of students to schools outside the neighborhood and has been a partnership between the St. Paul School District, West Side Boosters and West Siders for Strong Schools.

"Join us for a community barbecue to celebrate the end of the school year, the beginning of summer and everything we love about the West Side!" states a flier for the event.

Last week, one local school, Riverview West Side School of Excellence Elementary, was chosen by the district and its teachers union as a pilot site for efforts to improve school climate. Each of the six schools selected will receive $150,000 to implement its behavior program.

This week's West Side Wednesday event runs from 5 to 8 p.m. on the athletic fields outside Humboldt High School, and will include live music and a family kickball game, among other activities. West Side Boosters will grill the food. The event will be moved inside the school if it rains.
