For cello lovers

The CELLOici mini-festival continues with a recital by Silver Ainomäe, associate principal cellist at the Minnesota Orchestra. The pan-national program includes sonatas by Beethoven and Debussy, "Fratres" by Ainomäe's fellow Estonian Arvo Pärt and "Le Grand Tango" by Argentine Astor Piazzolla. Pianist Timothy Lovelace accompanies. (7:30 p.m. Tue., Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, Mpls.; $15-$20, celloanamerican experience.com)

New work by Gaelynn Lea

The Lake Superior Chamber Orchestra premieres a piece by Gaelynn Lea, the Duluth violinist and singer/songwriter who won NPR's nationwide Tiny Desk Contest in 2016. Written for string orchestra, Lea's work was conceived in five movements as "a plea for disability rights, and a celebration of disability pride." And Lea herself will perform as a soloist. (7:30 p.m. Thu., Weber Music Hall, University of Minnesota Duluth; $5-$20, lakesuperior chamberorchestra.org)

Forgotten treasure

Edward MacDowell's Second Piano Concerto from 1885 was once considered the finest ever written by an American, but it gradually disappeared from concert platforms over the years. Classical Music Hall of Fame pianist André Watts revives the piece for his Sommerfest appearance with the Minnesota Orchestra. The concert also includes Tchaikovsky's bracing, lyrical Third Symphony, a work often passed over in favor of the composer's later symphonies, as well as his "Sleeping Beauty" suite, which plays firmly to the romantic sensibilities of outgoing Sommerfest director Andrew Litton. (8 p.m. Fri., Orchestra Hall, Mpls.; $30-$70, 612-371-5656, minnesotaorchestra.org)

Waltzes and more

Andrew Litton leads another Sommerfest program with William Wolfram playing Tchaikovsky's Third Piano Concerto, a rarity on the concert circuit. Also featured is a selection of waltzes by the great Johann Strauss Jr. (8 p.m. Sat., Orchestra Hall, Mpls.; $30-$70, 612-371-5656, minnesotaorchestra.org)

Richly varied chamber music

Most string quartets have two violins, a viola and cello, but Anton Arensky's "Variations on a Theme of Tchaikovsky" drops a violin and adds a second cello. Hear what that sounds like during this chamber concert by Minnesota Orchestra players. Also featured are Poulenc's wonderful Flute Sonata, Richard Strauss' Cello Sonata, plus a selection of Nino Rota's intriguing music for Federico Fellini films. (4 p.m. Sun., Orchestra Hall, Mpls.; $12-$30, 612-371-5656, minnesotaorchestra.org)
