There are two things prep sports fans check when making plans for the spring months: the schedule and the weather report. You want matchups and tournaments to be juicy, but not downright wet.
Which is why it is so difficult to set sights too far ahead or clear the schedule in advance. Too often, the best-drawn plans are washed away like chalk on a sidewalk.
For our purposes here, we'll pretend the forecast is for 70 degrees and sunny all week. But just remember, that game that looks so inviting when making plans Monday likely could be rescheduled — or even canceled — three days later.
Softball
Tuesday: Anoka at Spring Lake Park, 4:30 p.m. Two of the metro's best pitchers, Anoka's Amber Elliott and Spring Lake Park's Halley Jones, square off.
Friday: West Fargo (N.D.) at Chanhassen, 2 p.m. This game was a late addition to the schedule, pitting the most dominant program in North Dakota (19 consecutive state championships) against Minnesota's defending Class 4A champion. Also: Park of Cottage Grove at Woodbury, 4:30 p.m.
Boys' golf
Wednesday: Holy Family Invitational. It's not the biggest tournament of the season or even the week, but this nine-team showdown at Wayzata Country Club can't be topped when it comes to quality. All nine teams are ranked among the top 22 in the MGA's cumulative rankings, including the top five: No. 1 Minnetonka, No. 2 Blake, No. 3 Edina, No. 4 St. Michael-Albertville and No. 5 Wayzata. It also include a glimpse of two defending state champs: Minnetonka's Ben Sigel (Class 3A) and Blake's Derek Hitchner (2A). It all starts at 10 a.m.
Boys' tennis
Wednesday: East Ridge at Blake, 4 p.m. East Ridge, No. 3 in Class 2A and featuring the No. 1-ranked singles player in the state in Ben van der Sman, takes on No. 1-ranked Blake.
Baseball
Monday: Champlin Park at Eden Prairie, 4 p.m.
Wednesday: Burnsville at Lakeville North, 4:30 p.m.
