The Traveler: Susan M. Gulden of Plymouth.

The scene: Wild horses roam Unalaska Island, one of the Aleutian Islands, an archipelago that stretches like a ribbon between the Bering Sea and the Pacific Ocean.

The trip: Gulden was visiting her sister, who lived in Unalaska, near the port known as Dutch Harbor. On a weekend trip, Gulden was determined to spend time capturing images of the islands. "I wanted to take pictures of crabbing and fishing activities, the old Russian Orthodox Church, the eagles and treeless mountains carpeted in gold. What I really dreamed of capturing were the wild horses of the Aleutian Islands," she wrote in an e-mail. "The horses are the offspring of stock horses that once lived on a sheep ranch on the island. How they survive the relentless winds and the bracing winters is a mystery."

The moment: Gulden and her sister were hiking the tundra near Morris Cove on the island when they encountered these horses grazing near a beach. "I couldn't believe it. The sun was out. The mountains were candy-coated. A fishing ship was passing by. The blue waters of the Bering Sea, almost a tropical color," she wrote.

How I got this shot: "I had to work fast using my Canon Rebel T3i — this was the shot of a lifetime," wrote Gulden, who used no special equipment or camera setting.
