Set in 2045, Steven Spielberg's speedy, fluid "Ready Player One" (⋆⋆½) features folks who live in unkempt shipping containers and fixate on the virtual game world of "The Oasis." Its late designer has filled it with '80s pop culture icons, with the chance to inherit his fortune. Adapted from Ernest Cline's bestseller, the half-live/half-animated film follows nerdy Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan). The references to yesteryear are visually amazing but rapidly reach the point of diminishing returns.
