"Dunkirk," by Christopher Nolan of "Dark Knight" fame, is a cinematic triumph that will awe some viewers and alienate others as it jumps back and forth in time, depicting the near annihilation of the British army in 1940 in a ferocious beachfront battle. Fans of Hollywood connect-the-dots narratives may be frustrated, but Nolan does a magnificent job with his mostly young cast, shooting close-up after close-up of their petrified eyes as German bombs rain down.
