Massachusetts defenseman Cale Makar on Friday was named winner of the Hobey Baker Award, which goes to college hockey's top player. The sophomore beat out two other defensemen, St. Cloud State senior Jimmy Schuldt of Minnetonka and Harvard junior Adam Fox, when the announcement was made in Buffalo, N.Y., as part of NCAA Frozen Four weekend.

In addition, Minnesota teams placed four players on the American Hockey Coaches Association West All-America first team.

Gophers forward Rem Pitlick, Minnesota Duluth goalie Hunter Shepard and St. Cloud State defenseman Jimmy Schuldt and forward Patrick Newell were named to the first team. The other first-team members were Michigan defenseman Quinn Hughes and Michigan State forward Taro Hirose.

Three others from Minnesota schools were named to the second team: St. Cloud State defenseman Jack Ahcan and forward Blake Lizotte and Minnesota Duluth defenseman Scott Perunovich.

Shepard also was among five finalists for the Mike Richter Award (nation's top goalie), which went to Northeastern's Cayden Primeau. Clarkson's Jake Kielly of Eden Prairie also was a Richter finalist.

Clarkson forward Nico Sturm, who signed with the Wild after the season, was named to the East All-America first team.

Wisconsin's Jake Bunz won the Hockey Humanitarian Award.
