Two construction workers where hurt Monday morning when a trench they were digging in Minnetonka collapsed.

The men were working on a road rehabilitation project in the 1900 block of Oakland Road when the dirt gave way about 10 a.m., said city spokeswoman Kari Spreeman.

According to scanner reports, one of the men who fell in was completely covered and not breathing. Both were rescued and taken by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center. One was in "moderate" condition and the second was in "very serious" condition, Spreeman said.

The men were contract workers for the city and not city employees. They were working as part of a project to replace an aging storm and sanitary sewer system and other roadway improvements.

Few other details were immediately available.
