Two men have been charged in connection with a shooting Aug. 11 in the Camden neighborhood, in which a bystander was wounded in crossfire, authorities said.

Anthony Clay, 25, of Robbinsdale, and 24-year-old Anthony Foote, of St. Paul, were charged Friday with counts of attempted murder, second-degree assault and possession of a firearm by a felon, according to a criminal complaint filed last week in Hennepin County District court. In addition, Clay was charged with fleeing with police.

Both men have prior felony convictions that prohibit them from carrying weapons, authorities said.

Foote and Clay made their initial court appearances Monday afternoon. Their bail was set at $1 million each.

On Monday, Hennepin County attorney Mike Freeman said that such "random" shootings must stop.

"Our aggressive prosecution of this case will reflect how seriously we consider these wonton acts," Freeman said in a statement. Clay and Foote deserve to do real time for their actions."

After spotting a man they suspected of previously shooting at them, Foote and Clay allegedly approached their target, who was chatting with another man at a bus stop near the corner of N. Fremont and Dowling avenues shortly after 10 a.m., police said. The men opened fire on the bus shelter, before fleeing in a silver Chevrolet Impala, the complaint said.

They were arrested a short time later after leading officers on a car and foot chase, authorities said.

The bystander was hit in the face, suffering a "serious" injury, and also wounded by flying glass from the bus shelter, according to the complaint. The attackers' intended target, who was reportedly armed and may have returned fire, escaped injury and tended to the wounded man, before fleeing the scene on a bus.
