Hargrove strikes again

Trumpeter Roy Hargrove has brought more than a dozen ensembles to the Dakota over the years, with performances ranging from solidly competent to memorably incandescent. Joining Hargrove for this two-night stand is vocalist Roberta Gambarini. Expect smart, scintillating music from faces new and familiar. (7 & 9 p.m. Wed.-Thu., Dakota, Mpls.; $25-$45, dakotacooks.com)

And now there are six

Chris Bates' Red 5 comes out of hibernation with its bassist-leader writing new material and itching to expand the ensemble. For now that includes trombonist J.C. Sanford, saxophonist Brandon Wozniak and trumpeter Jake Baldwin. Guitarist Tom Nordlund joins Chris and drummer J.T. Bates to make, what, Red 6? It's adventurous by any number. Honoring Coltrane's 'A Love Supreme'

Marking the 10th anniversary of its chamber recording of John Coltrane's magnificent opus "A Love Supreme," the Turtle Island Quartet performs the 32-minute piece. According to the string group's website, they'll also take "an in-depth look at Coltrane's landmark recording in the greater context of the music that preceded and followed." (7 & 9 p.m. Mon., Dakota, Mpls.; $25-$45, dakotacooks.com)

Welcome back, J.C.

J.C. Sanford moved back to the Twin Cities last year from New York City, where he worked as a well-connected big-band composer, conductor and trombonist with a slew of A-listers. "Can You Believe It?" is a recording created last year with his NYC quartet JC4, but released last month, that features Sanford's big, breathy tone and versatile array of original compositions. Standing in for the album's New York personnel on this local CD release party are the inimitable Bates brothers (Chris on bass, J.T. on drums) and guitarist Zacc Harris.
