Heroic measures

It may be early in the Hollywood backslapping season, but you'll be tempted to check out "The 22nd Annual Critics' Choice Awards," with "La La Land" leading the field. Instead, tap into your better self and save your cheering for "The 10th Annual CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute," where the emphasis is on non-celebrities achieving extraordinary things. Neil Patrick Harris, Octavia Spencer and Richard Gere will be on hand to assure that you won't suffer from complete celebrity withdrawal.

All in the family

I'm not convinced there was a huge demand for a second season of "Fuller House," but until Mayim Bialik ditches "The Big Bang Theory" and brings back "Blossom," the Tanners will have to do. The Olsen twins have once again passed on the family reunion, but expect the rest of the gang to pop by, including Bob Saget and John Stamos. Plus, a visit from New Kids on the Block.

The mighty Quinn

Aidan Quinn, who has smoothly made the transition from leading man to character actor, has never had much to do on "Elementary," so it makes sense that the Chicagoan try his hand behind the camera. Quinn makes his TV directorial debut in this episode featuring Shinwell, a character straight out of the Arthur Conan Doyle canon, who seeks help from Sherlock Holmes when he's framed for a gang killing, a scenario not out of the Arthur Conan Doyle canon.
