Today's trophy tales
David Zwack, Coon Rapids • 68-inch sturgeon • Rainy River
Out on May 7 with Kenny Lom, Zwack was fishing with nightcrawlers on the bottom when he caught this sturgeon, pictured above. It took 30 minutes to bring it in — it jumped out of the water three times — and Zwack said he was shaking by the time they got the fish to the boat. The catch, with a 29-inch girth, was 84 pounds according to the DNR chart. The fish was released.
FIRST NORTHERN
Corrie Day of Minnetrista caught this northern on opening weekend on Lake Minnetonka. It's her first fish on the lake. Day thought it was a snag, but learned that snags don't run away.
A JIG FOR A PIKE
Ten-year-old Sabina Rosell of Richfield caught this northern pike in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on a jig and a minnow. The catch, estimated to be 33 to 34 inches, was released.
