Griffin Young took a drop pass from Zach Michaelis and beat Andrew Dietrich with a wrist shot from one of the faceoff dots 6 minutes, 52 seconds into overtime to give Class 2A, No. 11 Elk River a 5-4 boys' hockey victory over No. 9 Eden Prairie on the first day of the Edina Holiday Classic at Braemar Arena.
Michaelis scored two goals, including the game-tying tally with 10.5 seconds left in regulation, before assisting on the winner. With the goalie pulled, Michaelis found himself open on the backdoor and knocked in a rebound to send the game to the extra session. He had tied the score at 3-3 with 5:09 left in the third period on a breakaway. His sliding shot found its way through the Eagles netminder. Jack Perbix and Jack Ferry also scored for the Elks.
Jack Jensen led the Eagles with two goals. Keegan Langefels had a goal and an assist, Andrew Erwin had two assists and Joey Graen one goal.
Buffalo 1, Delano 0: Jack Braccini scored a shorthanded goal 11:12 into the third period to give the visiting Bison the victory over the Class 1A, No. 9 Tigers. Nathan Mueller stopped 22 shots for the shutout. Jackson Hjelle made 23 saves for the Tigers.
Cretin-Derham Hall 5, Forest Lake 3: The Class 2A, No. 8 Raiders rallied for three goals in the third period to defeat the host Rangers. Matthew Gleason recorded a hat trick, including the game-winning and empty-net sealing goals ins the final 2½ minutes. He scored his first goal 7:06 into the second period to give the Raiders a 2-1 lead. Niko Castro tied the score at 4-4 for the Raiders with 4:47 left to play. He also had two assists. Grayson Milosch had a goal and an assist for the Raiders. Dalton Saltness scored a pair of goals 5:28 apart in the second period to give the Rangers a 3-2 lead after two periods. Dylan Fink scored a goal and Brady Peterson stopped 32 shots for the Rangers.
Orono 5, Bloomington Kennedy 3: Landon Wittenberg broke a 3-3 tie with 6:37 left in the third to lift the Class 1A, No. 1 Spartans past the visiting Eagles. Thomas Walker had a goal and two assists and Davey Burns, Jack Suchy and Lucas Jorgenson had a goal and an assist each for the Spartans. Noah Hanson kept the Eagles in the game with 47 saves. Craig Herman had two goals, and Zachary Workman a goal and an assist for the Eagles.
St. Louis Park 2, Lakeville South 1 (OT): Jonathan Sorenson scored 4:18 into overtime to give the Orioles an upset of the visiting Class 2A, No. 16 Cougars. Zachary Zemlak gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead 10:55 into the first period. Sam Baker of the Orioles tied it at 8:11 into the second period.
North St. Paul 2, Hastings 1: Austin Vandell broke a 1-1 tie with 4:44 left in the third period to give the Polars the victory over the host Raiders. Nathan Conroy scored for the Polars with 51 seconds left in the first period. Leo Otto tied the score with 1:39 left in the second period for the Raiders. Joe Reubish assisted on both goals and Max Rossman made 26 saves for the Polars. Scott Tuin stopped 27 shots for the Raiders.
Girls' hockey
Red Wing 4, Northfield 0: Taylor Heise, who has signed with the Gophers, scored three goals for a state-leading 28 on the season to lead the Class 1A, No. 5 Wingers. She also assisted on the final goal of the game by Sophie Schafer late in the third period. Mallory Tidona stopped 27 shots for the Raiders.
Totino-Grace 3, Minneapolis 2: Grace Hill and Hannah Gray scored 2:41 apart in the third period to lift the Class 1A, No. 15 Eagles past the host Minneapolis. Augusta Crow scored first for the Novas 1:29 into the second period. Gabby McDonald tied the score for the Eagles 24 seconds later. Erica Lieske score 8:57 into the third period to put Minneapolis back in front by a goal, but the Eagles responded 1:02 later. Erin Stehler stopped 21 shots for the Eagles and Lilah Schulz had 19 saves for the Novas.
Rochester Lourdes 4, St. Paul United 3: Clara Billings completed a hat trick three minutes into the third period to lift the Class 1A, No. 18 Eagles past the host St. Paul United, ranked No. 7. Billings got the Eagles on the board 43 seconds into the game on the power play and then tied the score 2-2 with 6:08 left in the first period. Emma Schmitz scored and Allison Smith had two assists for the Eagles. Jenna Hoops and Samantha Burke had a goal and an assist each, Catherine Kerin had two assists and Olivia Williams had a goal for St. Paul United. Corrin Hanson had 24 saves for the Eagles.
Bloomington Jefferson 3, Spring Lake Park 1: Celena Rea had two goals and an assist to lift the Jaguars over the visiting Panthers. Rea and Rachel Graff scored in the second period to give them a 2-0 lead going into the third. Lindsey Albers scored 16 seconds into the third period to get the Panthers to within a goal, but Rea scored into an empty-net to clinch the victory with 51 seconds to play. Lucienne Bianchi had two assists for the Jaguars. Sam Miller stopped 31 shots for the Panthers.
Boys' basketball
Chaska 62, Lakeville North 55: The Hawks rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit to defeat the host Class 4A, No 10 Panthers. Cole Nicholson led the Hawks with 24 points and Parker Bjorklund had 21 for the Hawks. Tyler Wahl led the Panthers with 11 points and Owen Blascziek and Tyler Lewko had 10 points each.
Totino-Grace 71, Elk River 65: The Class 3A, No. 8 Eagles jumped out to an eight-point lead at halftime and held off a rally from the host Elks in the second half for the victory. Charlie Jacob led the Eagles with 21 points. Nick Flottmeier and Braeden Mischke had 15 points each and Will Schmidt had 12 for the Eagles. Jack Burger led the Elks with 27 points. Dylan Furth had 15 points and Devon Roberts 12.
Woodbury 76, Lakeville South 65: Michael Jones led the Class 4A, No. 9 Royals past the visiting Cougars. DJ Fleming had 14 points for the Royals. Shae Mitchell led the Cougars with 27 points and Cooper Jackson had 18.
Girls' basketball
Orono 61, Rogers 59: Madeline Loder scored 36 points to lead the Spartans past the visiting Royals. Sam Orth led the Royals with 15 points and Alaina Brenning and Emily Rubbelke had 13 points each for the Royals.
Minneapolis South 78, Tartan 59: Morgan Hill scored 34 points to lead the Tigers past the visiting Titans. Solana Cushing had 18 points for the Tigers. KaTia Cummings led the Titans with 16 points, Ysareia Chevre had 14 points and Nevaeh Moeschter and Kendra Ekereke 10 each.
