Forever young
Second wind, third wind — how many rejuvenations has the Preservation Hall Jazz Band experienced in its 50-plus years? Whatever the number, the band's latest creative spurt is one of its best. Theoretically keeper of the flame for the venerable New Orleans music tradition, PHJB just released its second album of all-original material, infused with the adrenaline of the septet's 2015 trip to Cuba. The horn arrangements are taut and snazzy, the rhythm section seizes the very root of groove and a fountain of youth springs forth on nearly every song. A Fine evening
Along with being a seminal presence on the local experimental jazz music scene, Milo Fine was one of the original curators of the Thursday night improvisations at Khyber Pass. Now he's back — this time on clarinets — in a trio with his former disciple Davu Seru on percussion and Benjamin Mansavage Klein on tuba. Expect many textures and some pregnant silences. Dakota favorite
Another perennially youthful performer from the Crescent City, Glen David Andrews mixes gospel, jazz and rhythm & blues into a saucy gumbo garnished with a flair for showmanship. Over the years, Andrews has leaned on his singing more than his trombone prowess, which would be a shame if his backing band couldn't carry the musical load. Andrews is a Dakota regular with a loyal audience, but there's always room for new converts. (7 and 9 p.m. Fri., Dakota, Mpls.; $30, dakotacooks.com)
Steady rhythm
There is some stylish continuity in Saturday's double bill at Black Dog. Both bands feature guitarists, with Sam Miltich fronting a trio in the opener and the simpatico yet contrasting pair of Dean Granros and Zacc Harris braiding lines and dotting chords as part of the quartet Tall Tales as the headliner. The bonus treat is that both groups feature the same stalwart rhythm section of bassist Chris Bates and drummer Jay Epstein.
