pick of the week: It's time to strike up the band. The Minneapolis parks are kicking off this summer's slate of Music and Movies in the Parks (the music part, anyway; the movies start in a week). The first of more than 200 free concerts is at the Lake Harriet Band Shell on Monday with the Caribbean dance band Socaholix at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Beatles-inspired Rubber Soul the Tribute at 7:30. The concerts continue through Labor Day. As usual, this week's offerings include a bit of everything, from the funky blues rock of the Confused Brothers (7 p.m. Tue., Father Hennepin Bluff Park) to classic rock oldies from Joey Flip and Tim Cheesebrow (7 p.m. Thu., Minnehaha Regional Park). You can see a calendar of all the events at bit.ly/2rEqdtX.

memorial day memories: As we remember veterans, TPT (Channel 2), the local public media station, is soliciting Vietnam-era stories in writing, video or audio files for inclusion in a new digital "wall." For more information or to submit a story, go to mnvietnam.org.

Day by day: National Speak in Complete Sentences Day. Wednesday. Good cause. Likely won't change anything, though.
