Being the Star Tribune metro player of the year is no guarantee of anything beyond a nice newspaper story. In fact, of those who were chosen for the honor since 2010, their paths have been filled with as much (or more) struggle than success.
Here's a look at what happened to the players who won that honor from 2010-2015.
2015: JT Gibson, Champlin Park, Nebraska-Omaha
Gibson's season ended in December after an elbow injury required surgery.He averaged 5.3 points in the eight games that he played, with a high of 13 in a victory over Division III St. Mary's of Minnesota.
2012 and 2014: Tyus Jones, Apple Valley, Duke
The two-time award winner went ion to play one season for Duke, where he was named Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four, and ended up with the Timberwolves after a draft-night deal with Cleveland. He is currently the Wolves' back-up point guard.
2013: Reid Travis, DeLaSalle, Stanford
Travis suffered a lower leg injury after eight games this season. At that point, he was second on the Cardinal with 12.8 points per game and led the team with an average of 7.1 rebounds. Travis started 12 games as a freshman in 2014-15 and shot 48 percent from the field.
2011: Joe Coleman, Hopkins, Minnesota/St. Marys (California)
Coleman played for Minnesota for two seasons and transferred to St. Marys after coach Tubby Smith was replaced by Richard Pitino. He averaged 8.7 points and 3.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore. After sitting out for a season, Coleman played one game at St. Marys as a junior and then was sidelined by an injury. He did not play this season.
2010: Kevin Noreen, Minnesota Transitions, West Virginia
The prolific high school scorer, who had 4,086 points for the Minneapolis charter school, played 94 games at West Virginia and started in 40 of them. He averaged 2.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game as a senior and is currently a graduate student studying industrial relations.
