A 16-year-old girl was fatally run over by a man fleeing Minneapolis police in an SUV well after dark, authorities said Saturday.

Police officers saw a speeding vehicle being driven recklessly near Emerson and 36th avenues N. about 10 p.m. Friday. When they attempted to stop the vehicle, driver Howard W. Amos, 36, of Mapleton, Ga., hit the teen, police said.

Amos kept driving a short distance before jumping out of the moving vehicle and started running, according to police. The SUV crashed into numerous parked vehicles. Officers found a handgun inside.

Officers arrested Amos a block away as he attempted to carjack a vehicle occupied by a family, police said. Amos had two felony arrest warrants.

The victim was taken to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, where she later died. Her identity and official cause of death have yet to released by the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

Amos was taken to the same hospital and will be booked into jail upon discharge. Toxicology tests are pending.
