An 18-year-old arrested in the shooting death of a 19-year-old man in Stillwater was released from jail Monday "pending further investigation," said Police Chief John Gannaway.

Charles O'Connell of Stillwater was shot Friday in a residential area near 75th Street N. and Interlachen Way, according to police.

The suspect was jailed Sunday on suspicion of second-degree murder. He has yet to be charged. The Star Tribune generally does not identify suspects before charges are filed.

A private vehicle took O'Connell about 1¼ miles to Lakeview Hospital in Stillwater, where he died a short time later. Police were called to the hospital about 7 p.m.

A loaded gun was found in the vehicle near the ambulance drive-up area, according to emergency law enforcement audio dispatch. Police towed the vehicle away.

The suspect was arrested at the hospital about 90 minutes later, according to the county jail log. Authorities have not said whether the suspect is the person who drove O'Connell to the hospital.

Police Chief John Gannaway said there is no threat to the community. He did not explain how the two teens knew each other.
