In the woods, with beer
If summers are for kids, what is post-Labor Day for? The fine folks at Fair State Brewing Cooperative have a suggestion. For the second year, they are offering Camp Fair State, with all the amenities of the traditional lazy days in the North Woods, plus one that's strictly for the over-21 crowd: beer, and lots of it. Of course, there will be plenty of traditional activities (archery, hiking, swimming, canoeing, Capture-the-Flag), plus the more modern camp fare (yoga, climbing wall, disc golf, mountain biking). Several collaborators will offer programming, including Rahr Malting Co., Duluth Coffee Co., Minnesota BBQ Co., St. Croix River Association, Eat for Equity and YogaFit.
"Just because we're grown-ups doesn't mean we can't still run around and learn stuff. It just means we now get to do it with beer," according to Davin Haukebo-Bol, Fair State Co-op's membership coordinator, and director for Camp Fair State.
The all-inclusive weekend takes place Sept. 7-9 at YMCA Camp Miller in Sturgeon Lake, Minn. Cost per person is $450 plus fees for group lodging, with a private room upgrade available; registration deadline is Aug. 17. (There's a $50 discount for Fair State members.) A chef with class
Chef Takashi Yagihashi of Macy's Culinary Council will hold a free summer cooking demonstration class on Saturday at noon at the Southdale Macy's. The James Beard award winner has restaurants in Chicago and Ann Arbor, Mich., and has competed on "Top Chef Masters," "Top Chef Duels" and "Iron Chef."
Attendees who purchase items worth $35 or more in the home department that day will receive a copy of his cookbook "Takashi's Noodles." RSVP at Macys.com/CulinaryCouncilEvents. Guests will receive a $10 Macy's gift card, for use that day, when they check in at the event.
Food trucks galore
There will be 45 food trucks — yes, 45 — in downtown Anoka (2015 S. 1st Av.) on Saturday from noon to 10 p.m. as the Anoka Food Truck Festival gathers for its second annual celebration. And of course there's more than food — craft beer, games, fashion trucks and live music will keep everyone happy.
