A former student pleaded guilty Friday to attacking a Minneapolis school principal.

Lashawnte Bright, 18, will be placed on probation until she is 21. If she violates her probation, she faces an adult sentence. She was also ordered to complete a residential treatment program. Because Bright was 17 at the time of the assault, the case was handled in juvenile court.

According to court documents, on Dec. 7, Bright was in the cafeteria at Harrison Education Center when Principal Monica Fabre asked her to leave because Bright had been suspended and was not allowed at school. Fabre picked up Bright's purse and was walking toward the door when Bright grabbed the principal by the hair, pulled her to the ground and proceeded to punch the principal in the face several times.

Other staff members pulled Bright off Fabre, and Bright left the scene. Fabre suffered a concussion and head trauma because of the assault.

The north Minneapolis school is geared to kids with severe emotional or behavioral disorders.

"This is a tragic incident. Schools must be a safe place for learning," Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said in a statement. "This was a horrible attack on an educator who was doing her job serving youth. We cannot tolerate this type of violence."
