An instructor who accidentally fired a gun just before a firearms safety class was to begin at a Stillwater school has voluntarily resigned, but he will not be charged.

Nobody was hurt in the incident; the instructor had kept the muzzle of the .45-caliber Colt 1911 pointed away from the eight students and parents who were gathered for the April 11 class at Salem Lutheran Church School. The bullet lodged in a wall.

The 76-year-old instructor, a Cottage Grove man, was deeply remorseful, according to police.

He could have been charged with a misdemeanor for firing the gun within city limits.
