The University of St. Thomas fell behind 3-0 and went on to lose 3-2 to Emory University in the first round of the NCAA Division III softball tournament on Thursday in Salem, Va.

The Tommies had runners thrown out at home in each of the final two innings.

In the seventh, St. Thomas loaded the bases with nobody out. Chase Shortly singled to right field to make the score 3-2 and got caught in a rundown betwee first and second base. Micaela Trainor, the runner on third, broke for home during the rundown and was thrown out.

With runners at second and third, a strikeout and pop out ended the game.

St. Thomas will play St. John Fisher of New York at 10 a.m. Friday on the losers' bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
