Trainer Michael Maker brought five horses to Canterbury Park on Saturday evening to race in three of the Shakopee race track's richest races and left with two victories. I'm Betty G won the $100,000 Lady Canterbury Stakes by 1¼ lengths and Sniper Kitten closed to win the $200,000 Mystic Lake Derby by a length over 42-to-1 entrant Nobrag Justfact. Both races were run at 1 mile on a firm turf course and jockey Tyler Gaffalione was aboard both winners.
"Good horses make it look easy," Maker said.
The 4-year-old filly, I'm Betty G is owned by Three Diamonds Farm. She returned $7.60 to win. Sniper Kitten, a 3-year-old colt, paid $9.40.
Ex-UMD coach hired
Shannon Miller, the Minnesota Duluth women's hockey coach from 1999 to 2015 who won five NCAA titles, was named the coach of the Calgary Inferno of the Canadian Women's Hockey League (CWHL). In 2015, Miller sued UMD for discrimination, citing Title IX violations. She won the case this year and was awarded over $3 million.

• Former Gopher Emma Spagnola placed 11th in the 400-meter hurdles (58.40 seconds) at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
•The St. Paul Saints lost 9-8 to the visiting Winnipeg Goldeyes after leading 8-5 though six innings. Earlier, the Saints signed former Gophers second baseman Luke Petterson and catcher Aaron Gretz. Gretz played 59 games with the Saints in 2016.
• Wolves center Karl-Anthony Towns and Olympic gold medalist Jessie Diggins from Afton are among the athletes who will be featured in ESPN the Magazine's 10th anniversary Body Issue, which will be out Friday.
• Senior Samuel Moore of Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale was named the Gatorade Boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year in Minnesota. He won the shot put and placed second in the discus in the Class 1A state meet. The 6-5, 250-pound Moore signed with North Dakota State, where he also will compete in football. Senior Emily Kompelien of Edina won the Gatorade girls' award in the state. She won the 800- and 1,600-meter runs in the Class 2A state meet and will compete next at Brown.
