Dancing with the occult

In "Notes From a Séance," Shapiro & Smith Dance finds humor and communion with the spirits while mining the late-19th-century story of famous Russian occultist Helena Blavatsky. With precise comic physicality, a bit of stage magic and the company's usual fluid, electric movements, the piece journeys from silly to sublime as it delves into the world of Madam B. (performed by Laura Selle Virtucio) and her followers. Choreographed by the late Danial Shapiro and current Artistic Director Joanie Smith, the work premiered in the Twin Cities 20 years ago. (8 p.m. Fri. & Sat., Cowles Center, 528 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls., $25, 612-206-3600, thecowlescenter.org.)
