A security officer at St. Catherine University in St. Paul was shot Tuesday night.

The shooting happened about 9:30 p.m., when the security officer encountered someone in a wooded area and told the person he or she wasn't supposed to be there. The shooter fired, hitting the security officer in the shoulder. The officer was taken to Regions Hospital with noncritical injuries, police spokesman Steve Linders said.

As of 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, no one had been arrested but there was an active search for the suspect, Linders said.

"We're advising anyone in the area to take precautions," he said. "We don't know if there's a risk to anyone else, but just to be safe people should stay inside."

Anyone who sees suspicious activity is asked to call 911, Linders said.
