This Scarlet Tanager was found in Crex Meadows Wildlife Area immediately north of Grantsburg, Wis. It was one of the cold, wet days at the end of May. The bird was feeding on insects found in roadside gravel. A brief trip to a tree perch offered a more natural look for the photo opportunity. I like birding at Crex because access is so easy and complete. Well-maintained roads criss-cross its 30,000 acres of marsh, sand prairie, and woodland. There are designated parking areas, and miles of hiking trails. The northwest corner of Crex offers access to St. Croix River shoreline. Both species of waterthrush have been seen here.
