A dog that had fallen through thin ice into a swirling Bloomington pond huddled against volunteer firefighter Robby Smith as he ferried it to safety Wednesday.

The dog was scared, exhausted and cold, but otherwise fine when pulled out of upper Penn Lake near Haeg Park on Wednesday.

It was promptly wrapped in a Bloomington Fire Department blanket and delivered into the arms of its anxious owner, who was on the shore.

The Fire Department used the occasion to caution people to stay off lake and pond ice, and to keep their pets away from it too.
