Saturday's high of 90 degrees in the Twin Cities metro area didn't quite break a daily record, but it did tie it, according to the National Weather Service in Chanhassen.
The mercury reached 90 on Sept. 23, 1891, and Sept. 23, 1937, too, the Weather Service said.
Saturday marked the second hot, steamy day in a row, with at least one more to come.
Such heat isn't unheard of in the region, the Weather Service said. The latest 90-degree temperature recorded in the year Oct. 10, 1928, in the Twin Cities; Oct. 2, 1953 and 1992 in St. Cloud, and Sept. 25, 1920, in Eau Claire, Wis.
But it is rare. Since 1873, the metro-area high has hit 90 degrees or higher on Sept. 22 or later only 10 times.
Isolated showers are possible Saturday evening, with an overnight low around 71, the Weather Service said. Sunday will again be hot and steamy, with lots of sun and a high near 87.
From Sunday night all the way into Tuesday, showers and thunderstorms are possible, with highs back in the 60s and low 70s.
