A man who fled his homeland of Iraq years ago for the United States was shot on a Rochester street, and two of the suspects went through the dead man's pockets, authorities said Tuesday.
Four men, ages 23 to 25 and all from Rochester, were arrested in connection with the killing shortly before 9 p.m. Monday.
Ahmed Muafaq Abdulhu Al Naddf, 40, was shot in the chest, had no pulse and was not breathing by the time emergency responders arrived, said Police Capt. John Sherwin. Emergency responders began lifesaving efforts, but declared him dead about 15 minutes later.
Sherwin said all four suspects fled after Naddf was shot, but video from an apartment building showed that "two stop, go back to the victim and go through his pockets," coming away only with Naddf's cellphone.
Naddf leaves behind a wife and three young children, Sherwin said, adding that Naddf fled from strife-torn Iraq with his family several years ago.
"There does not appear to be a prior connection or relationship between the victim and suspects," the captain said.
Sherwin said the suspects have alleged that Naddf's vehicle hit one that was parked in the 2800 block of Charles Court NW. and belongs to one of the suspects.
However, "there's no damage or anything to either vehicle," the captain said. "Maybe it was the perception of an accident or they saw him and said, 'Let's go jack him.' "
A search of one of the apartments in the building with the surveillance camera turned up the handgun used to kill Naddf and his cellphone, Sherwin said.
