A police pursuit early Tuesday on Interstate 94 in St. Paul ended when the driver came to a stop and was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

State troopers spotted a vehicle weaving across traffic lanes as it headed east on I-94 near Snelling Avenue just after 2 a.m. The driver was moving at speeds of 50 to 65 miles per hour, according to an audio recording posted on the Police Clips website. Police pursued and the vehicle hit stop sticks — used to puncture tires — at John Ireland Boulevard and finally came to a stop.

As troopers approached the vehicle, they found the driver suffering from a gunshot wound, said Lt. Tiffani Nielson of the State Patrol.

The driver, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene, Nielson said.

Even though there was no use of force by officers on the scene, Nielson said the State Patrol has requested the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) assist in the investigation.

The eastbound lanes of I-94 were closed for about three hours, but opened shortly after 5 a.m.
