IMMIGRATION

"Nearly 180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records, ordered deported from our country, are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens."

Finding: Mostly True. Not all the offenses are serious.

Says Hillary Clinton "wants sanctuary cities."

Finding: Mostly True. She sees benefits to sanctuary policies

• • •

Says Hillary Clinton "has called for a radical 550 percent increase in Syrian … refugees … despite the fact that there's no way to screen these refugees in order to find out who they are or where they come from."

Finding: Half True. The screening is long and extensive.

RELIGION

"An amendment, pushed by Lyndon Johnson many years ago, threatens religious institutions with a loss of their tax-exempt status if they openly advocate their political views."

Finding: True. It's more than religious institutions.

TAXES

"America is one of the highest-taxed nations in the world."

Finding: Mostly False. Trump has tweaked a thrice-wrong talking point. Only America's corporate tax rate is one of the industrialized world's highest. Overall, U.S. taxes are slightly below average.

• • •

"While Hillary Clinton plans a massive, and I mean massive, tax increase, I have proposed the largest tax reduction of any candidate who has run for president this year, Democrat or Republican."

Finding: Mostly True. Generally right, though Clinton's increase is "massive" for relatively few.

INCOMES

"Household incomes are down more than $4,000 since the year 2000."

Finding: Mostly True, although the claim came amid a litany of criticisms of President Obama, yet the bulk of income losses came under President George W. Bush, not Obama.

TRADE DEFICIT

"Our trade deficit in goods reached nearly … $800 billion last year alone."

Finding: True. It's about $763 billion, to be exact.

TRADE AGREEMENTS

Says Hillary Clinton "supported North American Free Trade Agreement), and she supported China's entrance into the World Trade Organization. … She supported the job-killing trade deal with South Korea. She supported the Trans-Pacific Partnership."

Finding. Mostly True. Carefully phrased, but needs more context. Clinton's positions have changed, and it's not clear the deal with South Korea has killed jobs.

GUNS

Says Hillary Clinton "wants to essentially abolish the Second Amendment."

Finding: False. Essentially, still wrong.

JOBS

"America has lost nearly one third of its manufacturing jobs since 1997, following the enactment of disastrous trade deals supported by Bill and Hillary Clinton."

Finding: Half True. Leaves out key details, such as the key role played by the GOP, and the fact that manufacturing jobs grew after NAFTA's enactment. It appears to be trade with China that has cost most U.S. jobs.

FOOD STAMPS

"Forty-three million Americans are on food stamps."

Finding: True.

ISIL

"In 2009, pre-Hillary, ISIS was not even on the map."

Finding: Mostly False. The roots of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, also known by the acronyms ISIL and ISIS, predate Secretary Clinton.

CRIME

"Homicides last year increased by 17 percent in America's 50 largest cities. That's the largest increase in 25 years."

Finding: Half True. The figure derives from one credible study, but short-term changes in crime are hard to interpret. Overall crime rates have fallen steadily for a quarter century.

POVERTY

"Two million more Latinos are in poverty today than when President Obama took his oath of office less than eight years ago."

Finding: Half True. Trump cherry-picks a misleading statistic. The percentage in poverty is essentially unchanged under Obama.
