WASHINGTON – President Obama will headline a Democratic fundraiser in June at the Minneapolis home of one of his former ambassadors, Democratic officials confirmed Thursday.

Obama will attend a party at the home of Sam and Sylvia Kaplan on June 26 to raise cash for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Minnesota's congressional Democrats will be there, along with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and DCCC Chairman Steve Israel, according to an invitation to the fundraiser obtained by the Star Tribune.

"Obviously DFLers are excited that President Obama is going to be here, and we look forward to having him come in and raise money for our congressional candidates," state DFL chair Ken Martin said. "We appreciate his support … not only in June but through the November election."

The Kaplans have long been major Democratic donors, heavily involved in state and federal politics. Sam Kaplan is a lawyer and served as U.S. ambassador to Morocco from 2009 to 2013.

The fundraiser asks for $32,400 per couple for a VIP reception, dinner and a photo op, or $10,000 per person for just dinner and photo, according to the invite.

Obama was last in Minnesota in February, when he promoted a $300 billion transportation infrastructure plan at Union Depot in St. Paul. The White House confirmed the June trip Thursday but declined to say whether Obama will host any public events.

Martin said he did not "personally" ask Obama to come out for the event but had bugged the White House earlier about having him campaign for Minnesota DFL candidates.

"I think the president is a great surrogate and can talk about issues in a compelling way and rev up our base," Martin said.

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison, who represents Minneapolis, said in a statement he was "looking forward to welcoming President Obama back to Minnesota this summer. Congressional Republicans can learn a lot from Minnesota, where we just raised the minimum wage and indexed it to inflation."

The campaign of U.S. Sen. Al Franken issued a statement via e-mail.

"If his schedule permits, Sen. Franken is happy to campaign with the president," spokeswoman Alexandra Fetissoff said.
