A young woman died after being struck by a Green Line train in St. Paul on Friday, authorities said.
The woman, whose name has not been released, was trying to cross the tracks at Kent Street near the Dale Street station shortly after 3 p.m., said Metro Transit spokesman Howie Padilla. Preliminary information showed that an eastbound train passed by and she continued walking — into the path of a westbound train that was pulling into the station.
"All warning devices at that intersection were operational," Padilla said. "We don't know why she would have been crossing against them."
St. Paul paramedics tended to her at the scene, but she later died of her injuries.
Padilla urged pedestrians to heed the posted warning signals for their own safety.
"We know sometimes it means that people may have to wait a little bit longer to cross," he said. "But the small amount of time to wait for those signals to change is nothing compared to a person's life."
The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office will release the woman's name and exact cause of death.
Light-rail service was disrupted in both directions for about an hour.
