William L. 'Bill' McKee

McKee, William L. "Bill" age 62 of New Brighton, MN. We are grieving the loss of our beloved husband, father, brother, friend and coach, who died peacefully after a 4 month battle with kidney cancer on August 27, 2015. Survived by loving wife Andrea, devoted father to Annie, Phillip and Allison. He was the 8th child of 13 and was preceded in death by parents Myron and Eileene McKee and niece Katie McKee. Surviving brothers and sisters include: Mike (Joyce), Mary, Joan Fabian (Bill), Barry (Mary), Eileen (Dennis Philander), Myron (Carol), Pat (Joan), Teresa, Tom, Bob (Elizabeth), Colleen Espinosa, Kathleen and many nieces and nephews. Bill was born in St. Paul, MN, on September 16th, 1952. He grew up in New Brighton, MN. Attended Cretin High School, went on to excel in Basketball and Track & Field at St. Thomas College. He was part of the powerhouse team that held 4 MIAC conference championships and he held a longstanding MIAC pole vaulting record for over 20 years. He earned a Bachelors in Sociology and Masters in Educational Psychology. Between degrees Bill played professional basketball in Germany. Bill was employed by Ramsey County Community Corrections department for over 35 years where he positively impacted the lives of many juvenile and adult offenders. He later was the unit supervisor of intensive probation services. He also started his very successful basketball coaching career as an offensive coordinator at St. Thomas University for 10 years. He helped his team win 6 out of 7 MIAC conference championships and competed four times in the National Tournament. His head coaching career included: Cretin-Derham Hall, Blaine, Anoka Ramsey Community College and Mounds View High school where he coached his daughter, Allison, for 3 years. Currently, Bill was head coach of Augsburg College's women basketball team since 2011. In his coaching career, nearly every team he coached had a winning record and every team improved on the record it had prior to his arrival. He always led dramatic turn-arounds of organizations. He was an outstanding coach who received coach of the year awards on numerous occasions at every school he coached. In 2005, Bill was inducted into the Mancini's Sports Hall of Fame. At Augsburg, Bill broke many records including leading his teams to the most victories in a single season in school history. Aside from coaching, Bill also was known as the "best 62 year old player in the world" and according to his long time best friend Dennis Fitzpatrick he's "taking the title with him." He loved to play "noon ball" every day with his buddies and it was a highlight of his day. His brother Tom loves to brag about the players Bill coached including Sean Sweeney, currently the defensive coordinator for the Milwaukee Bucks, and Joe Mauer, of the Minnesota Twins. Besides basketball, Bill loved to spend time up north in Bemidji at his cabin, take trips out west, ride his bike and spend time with his family. He has touched and made an impact on so many different lives. He was a remarkable man, and we love him and will greatly miss him. Mass of Christian Burial Monday, August 31st, 11 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 2739 Stinson Blvd. Visitation will be Sunday, August 30 from 3:30 - 7:30 PM with vigil prayers at 7:00 PM at the Roseville Memorial Chapel, 2245 North Hamline Ave. and one hour prior to the Mass at Church.
