Lewis, Charles W., M.D. Dr. Charles W. Lewis, rural Minnesota family physician and surgeon and World War II veteran, passed away at home July 26, 2015 at age 95. His long life was marked by an ideal of service to humanity, love of knowledge, active participation in the arts, and an endless spirit of inquiry, adventure and accomplishment. His wife Shirley, 4 children, 2 grandchildren, their spouses, and 3 great-grand-children, invite his community to celebrate his life: memorial service Friday, August 7, 2015, at 11:30 a.m. in the Augustana Chapel, 1007 E. 14th St. in Minneapolis, MN. Born in Henning, MN, he returned there from M.D. training at University of Minnesota, Navy internship in San Diego, Navy service on USS St. Louis and a Marine Corps stint at Camp Lejeune, NC. "Dr. Charles" delivered hundreds of babies and did surgery at Wadena Tri-County hospital, where he partnered with co-surgeon Dr. Fortier who piloted his own plane in. Charles's landmark plastic surgeries saved limbs and reconstructed faces after accidents. His house calls braved Minnesota winters via snowmobile, Navy flight suit and survival gear. Charles was occasionally paid in chickens, home-made wine, and once, a high-end soprano saxophone from a local jazz player. At age 60 Charles suffered a stroke causing right-sided paralysis and loss of most speech. Retiring to Cape Coral FL, he and Shirley devoted their next 35 years to inspiring others faced with challenges. He became an artist using only his left hand in a broad range of media and won handicapped golfer trophies using only his left arm. He and Shirley traveled by plane, bus, ferry, train, and taxi from Cape Coral all across North America to veterans' events and ElderHostels. Memorials suggested to the Landmark Center, Henning, MN.
