Dr. Elmer J. Martinson

Martinson, Dr. Elmer J. age 97, of Orono, passed away June 27. He was born November 16, 1917 and grew up in Wayzata, MN, with his parents Dr. Carl J. and Alma Martinson, his grandfather Martin Martinson, and brother Arthur (all deceased). He attended Widsten School in Wayzata; graduated high school from Maplewood Academy in Hutchinson, MN; then graduated with a B.S. degree from Union College; completed a Doctor of Medicine degree at Loma Linda University in California; and then joined the Air Force to command the hospital at the 8th Air Force base at High Wycombe England. After the war he completed a Masters Degree in Surgery at the University of Minnesota and joined his father's medical practice at Martinson Clinic in Wayzata. He was active as a surgeon at Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Metropolitan Medical Center both in Minneapolis. Elmer married Peggy Guy (deceased) in 1946, soon after his return from England. They had been lifelong acquaintances because of the strong friendship between each other's parents. They initially settled in Wayzata. With the birth of their first son in 1950, they started planning a family home on the shore of Lake Minnetonka in Orono, completed in 1953 where they raised four sons. Elmer is survived by; sons, Thomas (Joan), Carl "Jack" (Yunhae), Bruce (Nancy) and William (Pamela); grandchildren, Carrie (Ben Jones), Justin, Michele, Sarah, Marisa, Thomas Jr. "Fritz", Lindy, Lisa Ankeny and Kristin Ankeny; great-grandchildren, James, Sam, Eli and Jack Jones. Elmer was a founder, frequent leader and volunteer with his churches; Minnetonka and then Westview Adventist. He was an accomplished golfer and alpine, nordic and water skier. Elmer was active in the founding of Minnetonka Christian Academy and Wayzata Country Club. Services will be held Friday, July 3, 2:00 PM at Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, 15321 Way-zata Blvd., Wayzata, MN. Interment Fairview Cemetery, Stillwater, MN to follow.
