Susan Marty Dexter

Dexter, Susan Marty of La Pointe, Wisconsin, passed away on June 26, 2015 at 91. Artist, humanist, and lover of music, language and mushrooms, Susan is known in northern Wisconsin and the Twin Cities for her forest scenes, still lifes, and portraits of people and flowers, especially pansies. Susan was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on July 3, 1923, to Sam and Libby Marty. The eldest of four children, Susan was preceded in death by her brother, Samuel C. Marty Jr., and her sisters Mary Marty Eberhardt and Elizabeth Marty Tait. She is survived by her son, Turo, of Alexandria, Virginia. Susan spent summers on Madeline Island since she was born. The rest of the year, she resided variously in Kansas City, northern Wisconsin, and Brooklyn, before settling in Minneapolis in 1962. She moved to Madeline Island year-round in the 1980s. After suffering a stroke in 2003, Susan began to spend winters with Turo in Des Moines and Cleveland, but continued to return to her Island home in the summer. In 2010, she moved to Northern Lights Health Care Center in Washburn, Wisconsin, where she resided until her death. A celebration of Susan's life will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2015, at 2 PM, on Madeline Island at St. John's United Church of Christ, LaPointe, WI. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to La Pointe Center for the Arts. The Bratley Funeral Home in Washburn, WI is assisting the family with arrangements.
